[Assorted Artists' Color Charts & Resources]|[Brand/Trade Name Artists' Paint & Pigment Manfacturers]
[Industrial Pigment Manufacturers]|[Uncategorised Colorants, Pigments & Inks (Tattoo, Cosmetic, Food)]
I assembled these links to color charts because i refer to them whenever I'm about to buy a new paint, and it's nice to have them all in one spot. The only really useful charts are the ones that include the color index international pigment names. The color index names and numbers are internationally recognized by the AATCC, SDC, and the ASTM. In the brands that have the color index names & Color Charts on separate files, I have included a link to the technical specifications with color index names and the separate color charts. Be aware that the actual colors in the real world may look slightly different than they do online, due to your computer monitor brand & settings and/or the very nature of radiant (monitor display) vs. reflected light (painted surfaces). For more thoughts on the color charts see NOTES below
Info: Artists' Brands/Trademarks are sorted Alphabetically, the names are linked to a company's main web page. I can't put every single artist paint or pigment maker in the world here, but I've tried to make the list as comprehensive as possible, If you know any quality paint brands I've missed, let me know.
The color chart links are notated with:
(Web) = link to the website color charts, resources & info or
(PDF) = PDF color chart, technical sheets, SDS and other information pdf files available by either direct download or available on the website.
(JPG) = Jpg, Png, Bmp or other type of bitmap/raster images.
** Double asterisks next to a Web link, color chart or PDF file etc. indicate there are no Colour Index Pigment Names or pigment information available on that specific link only.
When possible, I have included some discontinued lines of paints with color charts and brochures, along with some older color charts for historical reference information only.

HandPrint by Bruce MacEvoy: Handprint's Guide to Watercolor Pigments and The Complete Palette is the best resource for water color, paint & pigment information. The color/pigment pages are separated by color hue and include color index names, brand names, color swatches and Bruce MacEvoy's own, real world, lightfastness tests. Highly recommended.
Jane Blundell's Watercolour Swatches (Web): Jane Blundell at janeblundellart.com has an incredible web page with her own hand painted watercolour swatches. These swatches are listed by Color, Colour Index number, color name & paint brand; along with staining, lightfast rating, granulation and transparency information... Just excellent work! Highly recommended.
WetCanvas forums: Although, not color charts per say, it is one of the best art forum & artist discussion websites; with many members posting their own paint/painting experiences, tips, art tutorials, questions and paint test experiments; including all artist mediums/binders, paints and art techniques.
YouTubers:
Dr. Oto Kano, Oto Kano's YouTube Channel: Her 'about page' says why I've included her channel in this list,"I test out and experiment with watercolors thoroughly! ". She has a series where she compares similar water colors & pigments , along with reviews and complete breakdown of specific watercolor paints. She also makes her own line of handmade watercolors. This information is applicable to any artist interested in colors and making paints, not just watercolorists. Many of her color charts and tests are avalible free on her Patron page.
In Liquid Color, Denise Soden's YouTube Channel: I've been binge watching her videos ever since I first came across her channel. Denise is a watercolorist that specializes in animal paintings. However, it's her great color swatches that made me add her channel to this page. Some video series of note are the Color Spotlight series, where she focuses on a specific pigment, comparing brands and hues and the Swatch with me series, where she swatches out entire paint lines of watercolors including Colour Index names, and covering almost every brand of watercolors out there. The other product reviews are also great. Her channel is mostly about watercolors, but the pigment info and swatches can be useful to oil & acrylic painters or any artist that is a nerd about color and pigments. Some of her swatch cards are available as scanned JPG images for free download on her patreon page, and there are high definition scans and more color charts available to her Patreons. I am mostly an oil & acrylic painter, but after watching a few or her videos I dug out my old watercolors (that I never used), and started to have fun.
Walcott Fine Art, YouTube channel by Jason Walcott. I have to put someone who works with oil paints and acrylics here. He has many videos on pigments and pigment history, along with mixing tutorials and examples. He shows example swatches of oil paint brands and the pigments they are made of in a series that is divided into specific hues, such as red, blues, greens, etc. Well worth watching.

Pfeiffer Art Supply. Art Brands Top^
Truely handmade watercolor paints made in the San Diego California area.
They state: "Pfeiffer Art Supply began with wanting to craft pure, vibrant, non-toxic pigments and other natural ingredients such as: organic honey, a natural preservative, and gum arabic into beautiful, buttery watercolor pans of paint.", "The pigments are all mulled by hand on a glass slab. Also, each paint is poured by hand into their half or whole sized pans. Each color takes about a week from start to finish to create and no two will look "perfect" or alike. It is normal for some cracking to appear." All their colors are named after birds.

QoR Modern Watercolors: Art Brands Top^
Made by Golden in the US.
"The exceptional color strength of QoR Watercolor is achieved through the use of a unique binder called Aquazol®. Conservators have been using Aquazol since the early 1990's as an adhesive, consolidant, and inpainting medium. The properties that make it ideal for use in conservation also make it a great binder for watercolor paint. It is highly soluble in water and remains resoluble over time. It remains stable after accelerated light aging tests with no significant change in color, and it is very safe to work with. Aquazol can hold much greater amounts of pigment than the same amount of gum Arabic, while retaining a strong and flexible paint film."
On the website CI names can be found by selecting the color swatches to open detailed information.

Redwood Willow: Art Brands Top^
A small company in the US, creating artist grade paint by hand. They "begin by making a variety of binders that work perfectly for each individual pigment. Each color is then lovingly created using traditional tools - a glass muller and granite slab - to properly disperse the pigment into the binder. The liquid paint is then added in 4 layers allowing the paint to dry completely, ensuring the pan is filled to the brim."
They must be good, because they're always sold out...

UMTOM BARVY: Art Brands Top^
Czech Manufacturer. After the fall of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia in 1989, the developing democracy in Czechoslovakia enabled the business to go private to the hands of a company employee. After the dissolution of Czechoslovakia and foundation of the Czech Republic the legal status of the DÍLO product trademark became uncertain, therefore in 1996 the company changed it's name to UMTON BARVY and since that time all it's products (artistic oil and water colours, designer gouaches and preparations for artistic painting) have borne this name.

Wallace Seymour (formerly Pip Seymour): Art Brands Top^
Rebecca Wallace and Pip Seymour formed the UK company Pip Seymour fine art products in 2011. "We looked at long forgotten colours, alongside ancient and modern pigments to create colour palettes to suit the needs of the most progressive and challenging artists". They have some interesting sets & paints using rare old pigments. Some of their watercolors are made with gum arabic & gum tragancanth and may need to be activated with warm water or let soak a bit. Well known in the UK & Europe, but hard to get in the Americas. They do not sell direct to artists - "our vision is to support the independent retailers".
Colour Index Pigment information is available for Oils & Acrylics on their website but for some reason they do not indicate the watercolour pigments, instead they ask you to refer to' The Artist's Handbook by Pip Seymour'. They appear to have exclusive kits, paints & and pigments available with certain art supply distributors such as Turners Art Materials in the UK, and Pigment Lab in Australia. Turners will ship to the Americas if you e-mail them, Pigment Lab appears to ship internationally to the US and other countries. Turners has some PDF color charts available, but they don't include pigment info.

A world renouned brand of art materials, founded in 1832 in London, England by William Winsor and Henry Newton. The firm was originally located at Henry Newton's home. A few months before his death, Henry Newton sold the business to the newly incorporated firm of "Winsor & Newton Ltd.", which included members of both families amongst the shareholders.

Zecchi - Colori - Belle Arti: Art Brands Top^
Art Supplier in Florence, Italy. "Studio Fiorentino, the first University of Florence (dated 1348) that gave the street its current name. The paint store - located in this street for centuries - has always been an important reference point for Florentine artisans and painters." "Zecchi - which took over the business in the fifties - based on the Cennino Cennini’s treatise I Libro Dell’Arte, has succeeded in finding, reviving or reproducing all the colours and materials used by pre-Renaissance and Renaissance painters. The major Florentine works of art - but also some of the most important international art masterpieces - have been restored with the help of Zecchi’s products." Their paints are very hard to find in the US.
I could find only a few color charts, and could not find any color charts that included CI Pigment names, although they
do have some traditional pigment names, there is no way to tell in the "hue" colors what pigments are in the paint. Maybe they're in Cennino Cennini’s treatise?....I guess they really believe in that "old world" stuff.

NOTES: Many brand name paints are convenience mixtures and some have misleading color names (indicating an overall hue, or historic pigment hue, instead of the actual pigments used) and these specifications & charts help to sort them all out. It is essential to know what colors are mixtures and which ones are single pigments. I feel single pigments paints are necessary to get clean mixes when mixing your own paint. Some companies mix as many as 5-7 colors to get a "hue" substitute to the a historic color and if you attempt to further mix with a pre-mix like that, you can end up with mud. I can't see any reason a company would need to use 7 different pigments to get a "Naples Yellow" Hue. I have also seen mixes with fugitive or marginally light fast pigments included in the paint formula, with the paint manufacturer claiming high light fastness simply because one of the pigments in the entire mix was light fast.
Using convenience mixes and artist paints directly from the tube, especially when in alla prima and expressionism techniques, is great, but it is still useful to know what pigments are in the mixtures. Convenience color mixes may also give brighter mixes than one can make in the studio, because a paint manufacturer can make extremely intimate mixes using equipment usually unavailable to the average artist.
Knowing the specific pigments in a artists paint and the chemical makeup is also helpful for those who have concerns about toxic ingredients, health and allergies. Some pigments may effect other pigments in your paintings too, especially if you are fond of using historic pigments such as Lead White, Chrome Yellow or Orpiment etc.
Color Index Names are the only sure way to know exactly what pigments make up the paint, but some paint manufacturer's do not list their pigment content on the tube or even a separate sheet or color chart. Although I can understand that some companies may have a legitimate concern about guarding trade secrets, they also might be just hiding inferior or toxic ingredients. One should be wary of any paints that that do not conform to the voluntary ASTM specs and list the color index pigment names. Generally any artist paints that do not indicate color index names/numbers are, with a few exceptions, low grade paints.
